Happy May & Happy Spring?! Our weather circumstances make you wonder if it is indeed spring and if Mother Nature has some warmer, sunnier, drier weather in store for us at some point for more than one day at a time!

If the weather has you down and your workouts are lacking and you need some motivation to remain or get active we have some great opportunities for you this month that are all for a good cause.......The Foley Cancer Center @ Rutland Regional Medical Center!

A little background........

For more than a year now I have been wanting to do some sort of benefit for cancer as a result of hearing and experiencing so many people impacted by this disease either directly as a patient, as a family member of a patient or as a friend or family member of someone care giving for another patient. This fall I finally decided my best opportunity to support and advocate and honor this challenging disease would be to run the 2017 Vermont City Marathon on May 28th and raise money along the way to donate to the Foley Cancer Center. This decision came about because Foley is the local cancer center and that training for and running 26.2 miles is difficult but nothing compared to the challenge that cancer patients and their families face from diagnosis to treatment and survival. Training for a May marathon means months of training in the worst of Vermont winter weather but still that is nothing compared to the months and years of fighting cancer.

What I can tell you about my marathon training experience this time around (I ran this same race in 2009):

Surviving outdoor or even treadmill long runs was much easier when I remembered why I chose to do this

Practicing pro-active regular self-care allowed me to training pain free since training started in January. This included daily strength and flexibility exercises, massage every 8 weeks, ample sleep and good nutrition and hydration habits.

Adhering to a sound strength training routine over the past 5-7 years has also supported my body on long runs of 8-20 miles as the training schedule went on

What I kicked off on May 1st.....

With the race only 3 weeks away, on May 1st I launched a month worth of events to increase $$$ raised and we want to invite you to get involved with us for a cause! Over $1000 has been raised!

How you can help..........

1. Make a contribution of $26.20. And for each increment of $26.20 that is raised I will do a burpee (and you can too for a great workout)!

2. Attend any of our community classes for any amount of a donation that works for you on Monday the 22nd for an outdoor boot camp or Wednesday the 24th for yoga. Both classes begin at 5:30pm. The boot camp class will be held outside at the field space at the Howe Center near the park street entrance if Mother Nature gifts us a dry day or at the studio. Yoga will be held at the studio in Building 17.

3. Celebrate my birthday (May 21st) on Saturday May 20th by working out with us at 9am and/or donating $42 (I am going to be that old)!

4. Increase your awareness, learn more about Foley Cancer Center, and get any questions you may have answered by Foley Staff on Thursday May 18th from 6 - 6:30pm at our Studio in Building 17 of the Howe Center.

5. Submit a name for our names wall of people who have fought cancer, survived cancer, or lost their fight..........

5. Make a contribution to increase my (and your) burpee count on Tuesday the 9th which I have titled a day of giving to increase donations before my 5:30 Burpee workout which you can also participate in on your own! 6. Celebrate a month of kindness as race weekend starts with a final chance to contribute and hear the total raised on Friday May 26th at 4:30 at Body Essentials in Building 17!
